Data Engineering Manager - Data Platform (San Francisco)

The data engineering (DE) team is looking for a Data Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers, designing and developing data pipelines using the latest big data technologies. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing a group of world class data engineers, showing demonstrated growth in their career development, as well as the mentorship/growth and performance management of direct and indirect reports. This person will have excellent skills in designing and developing scalable solutions for data pipelines, including data infrastructure and data systems. A key component of this role is working in a product driven organization, understanding prioritization and strategic product direction, identifying components of the pipeline that are amenable to scaling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and mentor a team of Data Engineers.
  • Responsible for delivering projects required for improving the data infrastructure, data systems and tools that are used in our data processing pipelines.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to successfully deliver projects that further our tech stack and our systems.
  • Responsible for the development of automation across our tech stack to make our company scalable.
  • Design and develop processes for data pipelines using the latest technologies.
  • Establish a collaborative and innovative team work environment that fosters autonomy, transparency, high degree of craftsmanship and personal growth.
  • Drive data quality across our data pipelines, and implement system controls for managing data quality.
  • Performing code reviews and providing critical suggestions for fixes and improvements.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related degrees.
  • Experience in the healthcare / life sciences industry.
  • 2+ years of hands-on management experience of a team of engineers.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with data engineering, having experience with a Cloud provider (preferably AWS) & Big Data architecture.
  • Skills like data pipelines, ETL, data warehousing, workflow systems, etc. Big data technologies like Spark, AWS Redshift, Hadoop, etc.
  • Experience developing people and teams through coaching, mentoring, and feedback.
  • Experience building cross-functional relationships and working with other teams to deliver projects.
  • Very good communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, agile environment.

Bonus

  • DevSecOps experience in a cloud environment.
  • Experience in fast paced startup environment.
  • Experience with machine learning and statistics.

Software Engineer (San Francisco)

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

As software engineer at Verana you will be responsible for extending a set of tools used for integration with medical practices by engaging with internal users of the tool set, building and getting agreement on the roadmap, setting design direction and collaborating with the rest of the software engineering team to provide a high quality implementation of the toolset. In addition, you will be responsible for setting up and maintaining a SDLC that works in our environment to reduce errors and increase communication on release and facilitate a fast moving software development process.

Basic Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related scientific discipline is highly preferred. Job experience will be considered as equivalency.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in software development is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build software tools in a collaborative, team oriented environment that are product and customer driven.
  • Exhibit expert level programming that can be successfully applied in an environment that is currently .Net focused.
  • Experience with relatively low level back-end programming including efficient network communication, building reliable windows and linux services, and the use of streaming, compression, and common column oriented data storage formats for managing data transfers.
  • Good understanding of databases and of cloud computing, preferably with AWS experience.

Bonus:

  • Healthcare and medical data experience is a plus, but not required.
  • 8+ years of experience in software development is preferred.

Verana Health is seeking a Data Engineering professional with the skills to build and maintain data-driven applications. The engineer will investigate Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system databases, understand EMR data models, and identify/catalog various data elements present in EMR databases. The candidate will take part in the broader technology team responsible for managing company-wide data ingestion and healthcare data mapping effort.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Forensically explore relational databases to investigate, identify, and understand RDBMS data models.
  • Incubate/Design/Create SQL - DDL, DQL, DML, DCL.
  • Profile various healthcare databases - MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server. SQL Server knowledge is preferred.
  • Characterize database instances by utilizing SQL Server toolchain to identify and understand ER models.
  • Create/Review logical entities, define their attributes, and establish relationships between the various data objects.
  • Design physical data models and generate DDLs.
  • Understand healthcare-specific EMR data models, catalog data dictionaries, and map data elements to standard data specifications.
  • Work closely with technology teams to understand processes and policies driving the team goals.
  • Document and improve data mapping and data element identification processes across the entire data ingestion team.

Basic Requirements:

  • A minimum of a BS degree in computer science, software engineering, or related scientific discipline is desired.
  • 4+ years of experience in Data Modeling, logical/physical database designing.
  • Extensive experience in data modeling and logical data model design.
  • Demonstrated expertise in logical and physical data modeling (ER).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using data modeling tools, data profiling toolchain, and data (de)normalization techniques.

Bonus:

  • Experience in data models of one/two of the major EMRs - Epic, Cerner, Allscripts, Athena, CareCloud, GE Centricity, Nextgen, eClinicalWorks, Intelichart Pro (MDIntellesys), Compulink, iMedicWare, Integrity etc.
  • Basic understanding of the clinical & EMR workflow, including knowledge of expected high-level data elements and categories, and understanding of standard medical terminologies and coding systems (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT)
  • Python and Spark programming skills.
  • Experience with health interoperability standard information models (e.g., FHIR CDM)
